Dear Members & Visitors,
Taking into account the advice of Government regarding COVID19 and group meetings, we need to be mindful of the welfare and health of our members and visitors. The COVID virus has meant that Randwick Council has been required to limit the use of facilities such as the RLI on Clovelly Road. This has applied in particular to community groups such as RAS and the Quilters group who use the premises. Other commercial uses have occurred but under strict controls. As a result, the RAS Committee looked around for other possible venues that would allow members to meet weekly or fortnightly until the situation changes. In this regard an opportunity emerged at the Coast Centre at Little Bay.
The Centre is not run by Council and is not subject to the same restrictions. Following consultation with the Centre we have been running our Monday Studio Group from 10am to noon and membership was advised. Members who have been able to attend have enjoyed this time together. In November, given that Council was still not in a position to advise on the use of the RLI premises a decision was taken to continue using the Coast Centre and has been booked in the Art Room until the end of March 2021.

Dec – Feb – RAS online Art Activity
In May 2020, RAS expanded its activities to include a number of new initiatives, including RAS Online Art Projects. The first online art project began with the ‘Sketch-A-Day’ activity, and in June 2020 has progressed to include two Sketch-A-Day Galleries, an online Craft Gallery and an online Portrait Gallery.
The RAS Online Art Projects aim to encourage inspiration and creativity in our members, as they pursue their various art, photography and craft interests, as well as provide an opportunity to bring our members together as a community. All RAS members are welcome to participate.

CASS Art of Sydney Exhibition Online
Traditionally the Combined Art Societies of Sydney (CASS) have held their annual exhibition of member works at Darling Harbour in late January. This year this will not occur as a result of COVID restrictions.Rather, CASS has elected to run an online competition and exhibition. The physical works are not required but instead photographs of the works are to be uploaded to a dedicated web site. The judge, John Haycraft, will then review all works and allocate awards.Entries closed on 1 December. Photos of works are then to be uploaded by 10 December. The web site will then go live to the public on 15th January through to 28th February. All works will be for sale. The web site can be found at www.artofsydneyexhibition.com
Bendigo Bank Exhibition
Members will be aware of the recent Exhibition of member works at the Lionel Bowen Library in Maroubra. One encouraging outcome of that exhibition was that the Bendigo Bank (RAS sponsor and used by RAS for banking facilities) approached the RAS about the possibility of exhibiting member works for sale in their Clovelly Road premises.
Following an inspection and discussions with the Bank the RAS applied to the Bank for a grant for funds to cover the installation of a track hanging system. This grant was approved and the track and related accessories have now been purchased. The track was installed at the Bank on Wed 9th Dec. Immediately following that installation an initial group of approx. 12 paintings were installed for the Christmas New Year period. It is proposed that in the New Year the RAS will liaise further with the Bank in order to assist in the creation of an ongoing program of possible exhibitions of RAS member works as well as other community groups.
The RAS congratulates the Bank on this initiative which is consistent with its planned program of support in our local community.
