Plein Air Sketch Group

Wednesdays 10.00am-12.00pm

Meet at the Duck Pond, Parkes Drive, Centennial Park (near The Spruce Goose Diner)

Randwick Art Society is establishing a  Plein Air Sketch Group for members; with the first meeting was held on Wednesday 15th May 2019, 10.00am-12.00pm.

There are many places to draw and paint around Centennial Park that will be of interest to members. This will be an ad hoc group where anyone is welcome (including non-members). We will meet at 10.00am, then go to different areas of interest to do our art.

Please note, there will be no tuition and no cost to attend.

The first meeting will be held at the  Duck Pond, Parkes Drive, Centennial Park. (The Diner at the Duck Pond is handy where food and drinks can be bought.)

There is usually access to car parking in Parkes Drive. For those without transport, the 339 Clovelly bus travels along Darley Road. However, it is  a fair walk to the Duck Pond from the bus stop.

Some tips when working plein air are:

  • Something to sit on – cushion, portable chair, mat (the ground can be wet)
  • Bottled Water
  • Clothing – layered, and also be prepared if rain is forecast
  • Lightweight bag or backpack that will carry your supplies.

The following is a suggestion of what you may consider taking.

Connection Project – Australia wide – An Introduction

An End Loneliness initiative

June Cremin, Virtual Community Development Co-ordinator of Feros Care is working on a community arts project to start a conversation around loneliness. She is looking to connect with different artists and communities around Australia to see if they would like to be involved.

It’s an exciting project that involves individuals from all walks of life in our communities to create an artwork on a giant jigsaw puzzle piece.

Each individual is asked to think about the following question to inspire their artwork:

“I feel most loved when…”

The project involves 250 individually created jigsaw puzzle pieces  (60cm x 60cm) which will then come together to form a giant art installation for the launch of the project to end loneliness.

It represents the notion that although we are all individuals, we all have a place in the community and together we are better.

June is reaching out to you in the hope that you might be interested in getting involved or that you may know of artists or community groups in your region who would be interested in donating their time to create a puzzle piece to be included in the project.

Each artist/group will be credited as taking part in the project and can also agree to have their piece put up for auction to help in fundraising for future community projects that will help knock loneliness on the head.

If this is a project you would be interested in getting involved in please get in touch with June and she can send you more details.

Pieces will be distributed to you from 23 September 2019. You will have up to a month to create your artwork.

Deadline: All pieces must be returned by 1 November 2019 by post to Feros Care, Reply Paid 84337, Coolangatta QLD 4225.

Hundreds of puzzle pieces have been made available to schools, corporations, communities, arts groups and galleries, organisations, support groups, clients, staff and volunteers.

Each piece will connect with another to form a giant jigsaw. All the finished puzzle pieces will form part of an installation to be displayed at the grand launch event of Feros Care’s end loneliness project on Thursday 28 November at a venue in Byron Bay, NSW.

21st & 28th November 2019 From Art to Inspiration – Program at State Library of NSW

This year the State Library of NSW is once again running its series of Launch into Library Research public programs. These full-day seminars are designed to provide an overview of key library collections in a particular subject area, using a combination of demonstrations and hands on workshop sessions.

The program in November is one that we think may be of particular interest to some members of the Randwick Art Society:

From Art to Inspiration

The State Library has a rich collection of original artworks and other art related items. From framed oil paintings, such as those featured in the new Paintings Gallery, to sketchbooks which reveal an insight into the creative process, to elaborate artists’ books where the book itself is a work of art. This special two-day program will take you on an “artist’s eye” journey of the Library’s collections through a mixture of inspirational presentations, curated gallery tours and discussions. Participants will also get a rare opportunity to do some hands-on sketching inside the historic Mitchell Library Reading Room as well as in the Library’s new gallery spaces. Lunch is provided on both days, so there will be an opportunity for informal discussion and sharing between participants.

More details.

This program runs over two days, purchasing a ticket guarantees you admission for both days.

Day 1: November 21st 2019, 10:00am – 4:30pm

Day 2: November 28th 2019, 10:00am – 4:30pm
